LONG BEACH, Calif. — Authorities have identified the man killed in a fatal scooter accident earlier this week as 45-year-old Daniel Murphy, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The crash occurred in the early morning hours of Monday, September 1, around 3:20 a.m. Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officers were dispatched to Seventh Street and Federation Drive, near Recreation Park, after reports of a collision involving a scooter and a vehicle.
When officers arrived, they discovered Murphy unconscious in the roadway. Emergency crews administered aid and transported him to a nearby hospital, but despite life-saving efforts, he later died from his injuries.
Investigators said Murphy had been riding a scooter southbound across Seventh Street outside of a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a 2016 Hyundai Accent driven by a 28-year-old Laguna Beach man. The driver stayed on scene and cooperated with police. Initial findings suggest speed, impairment, or distracted driving were not factors in the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives review evidence and gather witness statements. LBPD is asking anyone with information to contact their Collision Investigation Detail at 562-570-7355. Anonymous tips may be shared through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or online at lacrimestoppers.org.
Officials say the incident underscores the risks scooter riders and other vulnerable road users face in urban areas. They continue to urge drivers and riders alike to remain alert, follow traffic laws, and share the road responsibly.
Murphy’s death has left his loved ones and community grieving a sudden and heartbreaking loss.
